FRNY / TNYA Beach Day

Beach Day 2023

Our Beach Day at Brighton Beach, in collaboration with Team New York Aquatics (LGBTQ+ swimming club), is one of our favorite annual events!

Date

Sunday, August 6, 2023

Location

Brighton Beach (near Coney Island), a 5-minute walk from the Q train

See directions below.

Schedule

7:45 a.m.: Long Run meets at host's home in Brooklyn

8:00 a.m.: Long Run departs from host's home (Carry hydration, money, and ID)

8:30 a.m.: Bike ride begins (starting at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan side)

9:00 - 11:00 a.m.: Runners finish at Grimaldo's Chair in Brighton Beach

10 a.m.: Meeting time at the beach, and time to get ready to swim!

10:15 a.m.: Start time for open-water swimming clinic

10:30 a.m.: Start time for 1-2 mile swim (pace and distance groups will be determined at the start)

Important! Swim Safety Information

Bring a swim buoy, and/or a brightly-colored swim cap (preferably a color that does not blend with the waves, so not white, blue, or black). Sometimes boats and jet skis come closer than they should to the area where we will be swimming, so it's important to be visible. This is especially important for the longer option—the 1-2 mile swim, which goes farther from shore.

Be sure to apply (and reapply!) sunscreen liberally and to bring sufficient water to hydrate throughout the day (or refill a water bottle using the public water fountain).

Further details about each activity are below.

Anyone is welcome to join our group and hang out with us at the beach without signing up.

Some portions of the event are only for members. For insurance reasons, sign-up is required for the run, bike ride, and intro to open-water swimming clinic. Sign-up is not required for the 1-2 mile swim (for more experienced swimmers), but swimmers are expected to be members of either FRNY or TNYA. It is a public beach, so of course anyone else is welcome to swim at the same time as us.

Please see the Front Runner gram or the TNYA newsletter for the link to sign up.

Run or Bike, then Swim!

Run

Bags will be transported for the run only (cyclists will need to carry their own bags). The run is a point-to-point run with bag transport provided by FRNY volunteers, so please pack lightly. Car space is limited and there is no room for umbrellas or large coolers. Do pack sunscreen, a towel, UV eye protection, and clothes.

Bike Ride

Cyclists will be expected to carry their own belongings to the beach. The bike ride starts from the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Cyclists are welcome to join at the Brooklyn side, just let the ride leader know (email multisport@frny.org if the leader has not yet reached out). Helmets are required, and it’s highly recommended to carry a water bottle or two.

Swim

Two options:

  1. Clinic: Introduction to Open-Water Swimming
    Meet at 10:15am

  2. Group swim (1-2 miles, can do shorter if desired)
Meet at 10:25am for 10:30am start

Bring a swim buoy, and/or a brightly-colored swim cap as explained above

Directions to the Beach

Grimaldo's Chair at Brighton Beach

We will be meeting a short walk from the Brighton Beach Q train stop, at "Grimaldo's Chair" (pictured here).

If you are arriving via subway, take Brighton 6 St. to the boardwalk, turn right and walk west on the boardwalk past Tatiana restaurant, and enter the beach at the concrete gazebo.
