Speed training is not just for sprinters. Runners of all speed and ability partake in these sessions. Speed training benefits runners at all distances and can have very immediate effects on your times!
Our speed training sessions are coached by our very own Kelsey Louie! Consistently one of the team's fastest runners, Kelsey heads all the speed training sessions and serves as the Front Runner Coach. Kelsey has been a member of FRNY since the autumn of 1998. He has served as FRNY President from 2005-2006 and before that,
for two years, as Treasurer. Coach Kelsey still actively runs and competes for the team. He also has a 1st place record on all the triathlon relays he has participated in. Coach Kelsey was also a recipient of the Front Runner of the Year award.
From May to November, members train at Central Park, Riverbank State Park track, or East 6th street track. From November to April, members train at the New Balance Armory Track Center in Washington Heights.
Marathoners and half-marathoners run weekly long runs from June to November (training for New York City Marathon or other fall marathons) and from January to April (training for Boston Marathon or other spring marathons).
Depending on membership demand, other types of training have been offered to members in the past. Examples are: shuttle runs during the central park fun runs, Cross Country training (hill, speed, etc.) up at Van Cortlandt Park, and Bricks (cycling and running).
